As early as 1910 an international flower delivery service based in the United States had been collaborating with foreign florists via telegraph, in order to make it possible to send and receive flowers globally. The association was known as Florists Telegraph Delivery and in 1920 it peaked the interest of Glasgow florist Joe Dobson and a nurseryman colleague from Saffron Walden in Essex named Carl Englemann. They requested to join the association as foreign members and with further interest shown from various other UK businessmen, the United Kingdom branch of the FTDA was formed with 17 members.

For purposes of communication between members, Joe and Carl were allocated the telegraphic addresses ”Interflora Glasgow” and ”Interflora Saffron Walden” and in 1953 the associations name was changed to Interflora. Things have come a long way since then, and today the Interflora delivery network is connected with over 58,000 affiliate flower shops in over 140 countries. They offer a wide choice of flowers and bouquets for every occasion, and today's delivery is certainly faster than telegraph !!
