Lego

The word Lego instantly brings childhood memories of endless hours of fun building forts and fairytale castles, and I'm sure Lego accounts for many young boys and girls going on to a career in the building or civil engineering industry. Since the first brick was made in 1949 it became an instant hit, and to this day kids around the world have Lego in their toy boxes.

Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen started off making wooden toys and in 1934 named his company Lego, taken from the Danish phrase leg godt, meaning play well. Through the years the humble Lego brick just got better and better and in 1978 the first action figurines hit the shops, and with the popularity of cartoons and super heroes, there was no shortage of models to base the figurines on. One of the fascinating aspects of Lego is the many different combinations that can be made with just a few bricks. Here is a mind boggling fact, just 6 pieces of 2×4 bricks can be combined in 915,103,765 ways !! The range of products now available is incredible, with many different themes and even mechanised Lego. A visit to Legoland Windsor showcases entire towns made of these fun little plastic bricks.
