Thorntons Confectionery has become a household name in Britain, and when Joseph Thornton opened his first Thorntons Chocolate Kabin in 1911 with the intention of creating the nicest sweet shop in Sheffield, little did he know it would become one of the best known confectionery stores in the world.

To give his shop an air of class he installed floor to ceiling mirrors behind the serving counter, making it seem larger, ornate glass cases were used to display his cakes, glass shelving held the array of sweetie jars, and shiny brass scales were used to weigh the sweets. To top off the elegant look, Joseph employed two young and impeccably dressed ladies to serve the customers. Unsure whether the business would be successful, he wisely kept his job as travelling salesman for the Don Confectionery Company. Needless to say, the shop was a success and the Thorntons we know and love today was born. The store's mouthwatering range of products now include an Easter selection, hampers, gift ideas, flowers and personalised gifts.
